STUDENT OF THE MONTH: Sambou Barry


This month’s all-star student is sophomore, Sambou Barry, also known as George. George has showcased tremendous passion and dedication to every class he is appointed to. From always offering to help his peers and teachers, participating anytime he can, and continuously grinding to improve on himself no matter what. These qualities are the characteristics of not only an excellent student, but his achievements and recognition have led him to the road to success. As we ask what motivates George to keep moving forward, without a break, he emphasizes the fact that he always focuses on short-term goals leading to progression which eventually allows him to reach his long-term goals. Not letting others affect him negatively, but having a mutual relationship with his classmates in order to learn from each other to get closer to their goals. Not only does George have a healthy, efficient relationship with his peers but he has grown to adapt to a greater level of maturity with the way he treats others. His mentality on how he treats others reflect how he wants to be treated, showcasing his respect for others. A mantra George always reminds himself of is, “I want to improve”, it has become his drive and the embodiment of his success in school, extracurricular activities, and relationships.

Modern-day Activism: Bea Miller the "S.L.U.T. "

By: Inaijah Conyers Beatrice Annika Miller, also known as Bea Miller,  is one of the many American female singers today that are redefining the music industry. At 19, Bea Miller already has an imminent voice in pop culture. Take for example Bea’s latest song, S.L.U.T. In this song, Bea takes a heavily negatively connotated word and changes it to mean sweet little unforgettable thing. She empowers women with just one simple acronym. As expected, Miller has received a mixture of both positive and negative responses from this song. Some people clearly missed her point when creating this song. Her intention was to take the word ‘slut’ back for women. Every day, women all over the world are called a slut. And while to some, this word has little to no meaning, to others it does. By: Tsering Lama       In our first ever student of the month nomination, Alexandra Branchinelli has been recognized for her persistent hard work in school and continued progression. Mr. Gershon, teaching Computer Science 1, has applauded Branchinelli’s skills to adapt to the new language as well as show attentiveness and care for the new dynamic in computer coding. At first, like most students, Branchinelli felt intimidated and frustrated by the new content, different from what has been taught before. However, her relentless, positive attitude has transformed her results as she patiently tries again and again at a new project or skill before seeking help. Her new approach to the class has allowed her to excel in her work as well as help her grow as a student.
