Author: Uriel Bravo Last month, New York City, one of the largest and most well-known places in the entirety of the United States, passed the “Stop Sexual Harassment in NYC Act”. Mainly focusing on the environments of workplaces, private companies employing 15 or more workers will have to indulge in training exercises regarding inappropriate behavior. But think about it. Is it even worth it? In these training exercises, people have to answer online questions based off of pictures and determining what the right choice is. WOW. What training am I right? Like workers are going to easily remember what they answered. In many reports done by CNN, the newly formed training exercises and videos do not offer any chance of exceptional behavior within a workplace, rather focuses on avoiding legal lawsuits. The characters, in this not-so distant future, ride stationary bikes to receive points otherwise known as merits. These merits pay for basic necessities such as food, soap, and toothpaste. Once an individual has 15 million merits hence the title, and a mix of talent, luck and beauty, they can be granted their “freedom”. They are granted this “freedom” by entering a talent competition known as “Hot Shot”, where there are three judges: Judge Wraith, Judge Hope, and Judge Charity. Only a select few are granted their “freedom”. With this new found freedom, individuals can enjoy a life of “leisure” and “glamour”. Biking is used for a means of survival. Most people in this society are so brainwashed that they have become comfortable living a life of monotony and stationary bikes. The rapid growth of student loan debt has often raised the question of whether college is worth the cost. That number, as daunting as it seems, represents a large scale shift in American culture; a society that once viewed college as the exception now views it as the expectation. Students today are siphoned through an assembly line-like process to higher education. The reasoning behind this process is that college education improves the footing and condition of Americans. While college is often championed as a place to expand thinking and education, the rising cost of many schools in the United States have dissuaded many students from pursuing a degree. Premiering last year in September, the show features the autistic doctor Shaun Murphy and his surgical residency at the prestigious San Jose St. Bonaventure hospital. The show’s insider perspective of l ife on the spectrum creates an interesting narrative much like in the Netflix show Atypical. In its attempts to be a well-rounded and meaningful series, Dr. Murphy and his coworkers go through a variety of real- world challenges in and out of the workplace. All in the while the series is kept interesting through one-in - a-million medical issues that only our young genius protagonist and his colleagues can solve.   The unusually abstract medical cases and techniques throughout the show are inevitable to keep the audience entertained. This month’s all-star student is sophomore, Sambou Barry , also known as George. George has showcased tremendous passion and dedication to every class he is appointed to. From always offering to help his peers and teachers, participating anytime he can, and continuously grinding to improve on himself no matter what. These qualities are the characteristics of not only an excellent student, but his achievements and recognition have led him to the road to success. As we ask what motivates George to keep moving forward, without a break, he emphasizes the fact that he always focuses on short-term goals leading to progression which eventually allows him to reach his long-term goals. Not letting others affect him negatively, but having a mutual relationship with his classmates in order to learn from each other to get closer to their goals.
